The brick making sector in South Africa currently emits roughly 2.2 million tCO2e per year (Sector Sustainability Report 2018). Algoa Brick was one of the leaders in a 5-year initiative to reduce carbon emission in the industry.
“Ongoing monitoring and reporting across key sustainability indicators is pivotal to sustainable transformation,” says MD Nico Mienie, who is also Technical Director of the Clay Brick Association of Southern Africa.
“Our sustainability report is based on an extensive data gathering effort through the online sustainability monitoring and reporting portal in collaboration with clay brick producers across South Africa.”
“Monitoring and reporting covers all industrial processes, including fugitive and combustion emissions. The report can be used by our management team to assess the overall sustainability performance, as defined across the nine sustainability categories contained in the clay brick sustainability framework.
The CBA Sustainability Portal ensures that companies meet all the many stringent requirements in terms of data quality. Companies are able to calculate accurately, and were aware of their Carbon Tax obligations well in advance.
