In mid-2020, Algoa Brick took delivery of a Bernini sawdust burning system capable of firing a complete zone of the Plant 2 tunnel kiln. A combination of coal and biomass is used, depending on availability of local sawdust.
Over the past 15 years, Algoa has achieved huge sustainability improvements. Our carbon emissions per tonne of salable brick are 20% below the sector average, our energy use is 6% below sector average, and water consumption is 45% below sector average.
